Why is it good?

This minimally processed cocoa powder comes from the criollo beans, that are not only one of the most rare beans, but they are also considered to be the most perfect cocoa beans in the world. With its high content of antioxidants, minerals and neurotransmitters such as phenylethylamine (the love molecule), our cocoa powder is perfect for chocolate lovers.

  • Help lower LDL cholesterol

  • Reduce the risk of blood clots

  • Increase blood flow to the arteries

  • Lower high blood pressure

  • Boost cognitive performance

  • Provide essential minerals such as calcium and potassium

  • Antidepressant & Feel-Good Food

Cocoa contains the substance phenethylamine, which is a neurotransmitter found in the brain that acts as a mood elevator and natural antidepressant. It may also boost our endorphins, which act as natural “happy” opiates and are responsible for the highs that are often felt after exercising, laughing, having sex or winning the lottery. Finally, Cocoa may also boost serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter that antidepressants target in order to boost overall happiness levels.

  • Antioxidants

Cocoa also contains approximately 43.6 mg of flavonoids per gram. Flavonoids are part of a powerful group of antioxidants known as polyphenols & cocoa is one of the highest polyphenol-containing foods. In addition, hot cocoa contains more antioxidants per cup than a serving of red wine or tea, and Science Daily explains it may even be the healthiest choice of the three. Science Daily also states that drinking cocoa may help to fight cancer, heart disease and aging through its antioxidant boosting effect.

Medical News Today warns however that most commercial cocoa powders have the antioxidant-containing flavonoids removed because they taste bitter; therefore, in order to obtain the health boosting benefits, consider buying our raw Sommer Foods Cocoa Powder, which is a minimally processed cocoa powder.

Blend into your favourite smoothies for a taste and health boost or make your own healthy chocolates and desserts at home!

Use it to make:

Puddings (even for breakfast!)

Granola bars

Healthy Truffles

Fudge and brownies

Sprinkled over fruit

Toast a piece of whole-grain bread, spread a layer of raw nut butter, add another layer of thinly sliced banana, & sprinkle with Sommer Foods Cocoa Powder. It's a healthy breakfast that tastes like dessert. It also works with any other fruit. Because the sweet from the fruit counters the bitterness from the cocoa, so you have chocolate without any refined sugar. Even a bowl of raspberries or blueberries can get a sprinkle of cocoa powder for extra deliciousness.
