Cadiz, Wild Tuna & Paradise Beaches

During our weekend getaway at the fabulous and definitely the best hotel in Vejer de la Frontera, Boutique Hotel V, we also drove around to nearby towns and beaches. We had a lovely lunch in Palmar beach and an afternoon swim in the huge waves after eating, but the best Wild Red Tuna we ate was actually in Barbate, in a local famous restaurant called El Campero. If you go, you must try the Spicy Red Tuna and the Tuna Grill - just wow! El Campero also has a lovely tapas place in Zahara de los Atunes, where we had lunch and loved it as well.

Cadiz - perfect for a day trip

The longest day trip we took was to Cadiz, which is actually the oldest city in Western Europe. Built on a strip of land surrounded by the sea this used to be the home of the Spanish Navy in the 16th-century. When you’re in Cadiz make sure to check out the stunning old town and the 18th-century Cádiz Cathedral, also Park Genoves is beautiful and the gardening is just mind-blowing! Also near the Cathedral you’ll find a very cool big Market, which is great for a quick paella and beer tapa if you’re hungry.

James Bond Beach

The most famous beach in Cadiz is definitely La Caleta. Did you know that James Bond movie, Die Another Day, was filmed here? The famous scene where Halle Berry strolls out of the sea. They removed the castle´s causeway digitally, and the Andalucian city´s seafront promenade doubled as the Cuban capital´s Malecon. The hotel where Bond stays in ´´Havana´´ was El Balneario de la Palma y del Real, although Pierce Brosnan preferred the luxurious five star hotel Alfonso XIII in Sevilla as his base while shooting the movie. La Caleta is a beautiful beach indeed - a must-see when visiting Cadiz.
