Provence Holiday #1: La Bastide de Gordes Hotel - A Royal Fairytale

Provence has always been in my bucket list and what a better way to celebrate the anniversary of me and my boyfriend than in one of the most romantic places in the world. We arrived at the stunning La Bastide de Gordes Hotel quite late in the evening, but with the navigation apps that we all use nowadays, the drive from Marseille to Gordes village was actually fairly easy, taking less than an hour to find our palace. And it really is a palace fit for royalty.. Set in a 12th-century fortifications, La Bastide de Gordes 5* Hotel oozes elegance and royalty from the moment you step into the lavish lobby and hand your car keys to the welcoming staff in medieval clothing. The warm welcome started at the reception and continued throughout our visit - I don’t think I have ever encountered better service at a hotel - just exceptional.

La Bastide de Gordes is located in the hilltop village of Gordes, with the nearest big city is Avignon. The village has been listed as "one of the most beautiful villages of France" and it definitely is worth visiting. And so it the hotel, even if you're not staying there I recommend to book a lunch or dinner at La Bastide de Gordes. It has actually just been reopened after a 20 million euro revamp and it is a true masterpiece what they have achieved. The 5 Star Luxury Hotel now has 40 beautiful rooms and suites, a new bigger Sisley spa, four swimming pools including a new 30 meter pool at the edge of terraced gardens, a Michelin star restaurant by Pierre Gagnaire in addition to its original La Citadelle and a new event area. It took a year to find the right decoration from various antique stores and auctions of France to awaken the 18th century look and feel that you will have as soon as you step in the pastoral castle. For example the floor tiles date back to 16th century and there are over 2000 pieces of art in the hotel in total, making it almost worthy of a museum of the time of Louis XV.

Room with a view

Our Superior Valley Room was everything we expected and more! With a floor space of around 35 m², we enjoyed breathtaking views over the valley and the Luberon mountains from our window in the morning. I’ve never stayed in a room with so much history and romance and of course the complimentary bottle of Champagne and all the other little details were just the dot on the i. La Bastide de Gordes really have an eye for every little detail - little recommendation cards on my pillow every day, suggesting different activities in the area, the Hermes toiletries in the bathroom, the beautiful Provence-style hat, the Sisley testers.. I can continue for an hour! You can really feel the love and the care for the place and the desire to fulfil every need and desire of the guests, when you’re staying at La Bastide de Gordes. After enjoying the picturesque valley views, we headed for breakfast at one of their beautiful restaurants - La Citedelle. What a unique setting, and even better selection of lovely French pastries to healthy options such as a Chia Pudding! Stay tuned for my next blog post about wining and dining in their exquisite restaurants, as well as some photos in the pool and in their new Sisley Spa!
